A Complete Guide to Braj Darshan
How to see Vrindavan, Mathura, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon and Gokul — how many days to keep, the order to visit and what to know before you go.
By Yadav Tour And Travels

Braj is the land associated with Krishna’s childhood and youth. It spreads across the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh and parts of neighbouring Rajasthan and Haryana. The traditional Braj Chaurasi Kos parikrama covers around 84 kos, but most visitors focus on six places: Vrindavan, Mathura, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon and Gokul.
How many days do you need?
| Time available | What you can cover comfortably |
|---|---|
| 1 day | Vrindavan and Mathura main temples |
| 2 days | Day 1 Vrindavan and Mathura; Day 2 Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon |
| 3 days | Add Gokul and Raman Reti, and slow down for aarti and parikrama |
The best order to visit
Stay in Vrindavan and treat it as your base. Mathura is only twelve kilometres away, Govardhan about twenty-three, and Barsana and Nandgaon around forty-five to fifty-five. Gokul sits across the Yamuna from Mathura.
- Day one: Vrindavan temples in the morning, Mathura in the afternoon, Prem Mandir in the evening.
- Day two: Leave early for Barsana while it is cool, continue to Nandgaon, and return via Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar and Govardhan.
- Day three: Gokul, Raman Reti and Mahavan in the morning; a quiet evening at Kesi Ghat.
Temple timings shape everything
Most temples in Braj close for afternoon rest, roughly from midday until four or five in the evening, and timings shift between summer and winter. This is why a good driver matters: the order of your day decides whether you see the deity or a closed door.
Practical tips
- Carry slip-on footwear — you will remove shoes many times a day.
- Phones are not allowed inside some temples, including Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi.
- Festivals like Janmashtami, Holi and Radhashtami are unforgettable but extremely crowded; book vehicles weeks in advance.
- For elderly travellers, ask about drop points close to entrances and avoid steep climbs in the midday heat.
Choosing a vehicle
For two to four people a sedan is enough. Families of five or six are more comfortable in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta, especially on village roads to Barsana. Groups of eight or more save money and stay together in a Tempo Traveller.
