Braj, Uttar Pradesh
The forest of Tulsi, home to more than five thousand temples
The heart of Braj, where Krishna spent his childhood. Visitors come for Banke Bihari, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and the quiet of the Yamuna ghats.
Vrindavan sits on the banks of the Yamuna, about twelve kilometres from Mathura. It is a working pilgrimage town: mornings begin with aarti and kirtan, the parikrama marg fills with walkers, and temple lanes stay busy until late evening.
Many temples in the old town sit in narrow lanes where cars cannot reach the door. Your driver will drop you at the nearest point and wait. E-rickshaws are useful for the last stretch inside the old town.
Most temples close for afternoon rest, typically from around midday to four or five in the evening, with timings shifting between summer and winter. Plan the big temples for the morning and the evening.
The most visited temple in Vrindavan; darshan is brief and crowded
White marble temple known for its evening illumination
Calm temple with regular kirtan
One of the oldest temples of Vrindavan
Sacred grove that closes to visitors after the evening aarti
Riverfront ghat for the evening Yamuna aarti
Best time to visit: October to March; festivals such as Janmashtami and Holi are spectacular but very crowded
